Tiryaki has trial at Cheltenham

Mustafa Tiryaki could be one of the first to confirm his departure from York Road.

A week after manager Johnson Hippolyte hinted club captain Ashley Nicholls will leave Maidenhead United FC, he revealed the Turkish hitman has been on trial at Cheltenham Town.

His goalscoring exploits for the Magpies at the end of the season turned a lot of heads and sent Hippolyte’s phone wild.

“Mustafa’s had a trial at Cheltenham on Tuesday,” said Hippolyte. “We sorted that for him so that he can look at how pro clubs go about it.”

With the budget set to be cut further, Hippolyte admits he will face an exodus of players, but at the same time has identified the need to retain the younger members of his squad.

“Jack Bradshaw - we’re looking to keep him after his loan,” he explained. “The likes of Sam Collins and the younger lads we’ll look to keep.

“Then we’ll see about the ones with more experience.”

However, it is the experienced players who are stalling the operation as they ponder their futures away from the club. Hippolyte had asked them to hurry with their decision, but until the play-off final is completed tonight (Thursday) nothing will be decided.

“Until the play-offs are over we don’t know who’s going to go up,” explained the boss. “I’ll start speaking to the players again on Saturday and get some feedback.

“I’ve given them a couple of weeks to sort themselves out.

“One or two players have put their names about. And I’ve looked at quite a few players, mainly young players.

“I think we won’t see many comings and goings at clubs until pre-season.”

A lot has been said about the coaching set-up at York Road. Many believe there are too many bodies for non-league football and have pointed at this area as one where money could be saved.

Yet Hippolyte argues different, saying not much money is spent on the backroom staff and he will do all he can to retain their services.

“David Gumbs - he’s not on the payroll - he helps from time to time,” said Hippolyte. “Dave Clarke is part coach/part player and he gets paid only for playing. At the moment he’s not going anywhere.

“Dereck Brown, my assistant, has been injured and I want to keep him.

“Martin Ireland - I’ve tried to keep on lesser money.

“Pat Palmer, our goalkeeping coach, I’m trying to get him to stay. It’s out of my own money.”

Meanwhile, second string boss Kerthney Carty has been linked to a local lower level club after the Magpies withdrew the Reserve team from the league for next season.
