Match report: Tarpey earns Maidenhead United deserved point at Wealdstone
Wealdstone (0) 1, Maidenhead United (0) 1
Dave Tarpey swept home an 86th minute equaliser as Maidenhead United came from behind to draw 1-1 at Wealdstone FC.
The United winger was in the right place to tuck home Adrian Clifton's cross to ensure the Magpies returned to Berkshire with a deserved point.
Shaun Lucien had fired the hosts into a 71st minute lead with a beautifully curled effort that gave United's on-loan keeper Will Britt little chance.
The Magpies dominated the opening half against the Conference South strugglers but couldn't make it count, despite forcing 12 corners.
Danny Green came close in the fifth minute but his side-footed effort at the far post was first saved by Stones' keeper Jonathan North before being headed off the line by Ryan Watts.
Wealdstone had their moments in a lively opening 20 minutes and could have broken the deadlock when Luke O'Nien's volley from Connor Calcutt's cross was well saved by Britt.
Devante McKain came within inches of giving the Magpies a first half lead but his downward header from Green's corner bounced up and over the cross bar on the half hour.
Wealdstone's Matthew Ball forced Britt into a decent low save with a 'Ronaldo style' dipping free-kick from distance.
But the Magpies went off wondering how they weren't ahead at the break after Eddie Hutchinson's shot from their umpteenth corner was scrambled off the line five minutes before the interval.
The pattern of play continued after the break with United pressing and Wealdstone defending in depth, but the tigerish hosts were snapping into tackles and giving their visitors little time to settle in a match that had plenty of needle.
Shortly after former Magpie Dan Brown was brought on the Stones took the lead against the run of play.
Britt flapped at a cross from the right and as he scurried back onto his goal line, Lucien darted in from the left and whipped the ball over his head and into the far corner to make it 1-0.
Lucien very nearly made it 2-0 moments later as the Magpies were caught up field chasing an equaliser and the lively winger cut inside Bobby Behzadi and almost clipped home a carbon copy goal.
United were finding Wealdstone's resolute defence increasingly difficult to break down, and it seemed they were destined for a frustrating defeat when Tarpey popped up to fire low past North after another driving run and cross from the excellent Clifton.
Britt needed to be alert to prevent Calcutt from restoring Wealdstone's lead with a point-blank save a minute later, and Green flashed an injury-time drive over the bar but defeat would have been harsh on both sides after an entertaining and fiercely contested Conference South fixture.
