Hippolyte surprised as Wall stays put

Alex Wall has been in fine form.

Maidenhead United FC boss Johnson Hippolyte admits he is surprised he hasn’t had any concrete offers for his talented young striker Alex Wall.

Hippolyte says he was expecting a lot of interest in the frontman who saw two moves to Football League clubs fall through in the summer.

But the expected interest never really materialised and with the January transfer window now closed, the striker will definitely remain at York Road until the end of the season.

Hippolyte said:“I’m very surprised there wasn’t more interest.

“We still get a lot of questions about Alex but nothing concrete.

“It’s great for us because we get to keep him for the rest of the season and he will be very important for us.

“But I really want him to get his move because he deserves it. Apart from DJ Campbell I’ve never wanted someone to get a move as much.”

He added:“With what happened to him in the summer he could have easily started to sulk.

“But he never did that. He just carried on and that shows what sort of player he is.

“He’s a real talent and if he carries on playing the way he has been recently, I would be very surprised if no-one takes him.”

After two potential moves to the Football League collapsed in the summer, Wall had to endure a frustrating end to 2011.

A persistant ankle injury saw him sidelined for long periods and his form suffered as a result.

But he is now fully fit and Hippolyte believes he is back to his best.

He said:“The injury was really tough on Alex but he’s over that now.

“In a way I think he’s hit form about three weeks too late.

“I think he’s got four goals in his last five games.

“If he’d shown that form a month earlier he probably would have gone.

“He scares defenders to death. Even in training our own players don’t like playing against him.”
