Hippolyte hails best team performance of the season against Staines Town
Johnson Hippolyte hailed Maidenhead United's best team performance of the season as they defeated Staines Town 2-0 at York Road.
The Magpies' boss said the performance pleased him more than the recent 6-2 thumping of Weston-super-Mare.
Second half goals from Ashley Nicholls and Adrian Clifton saw the Magpies to a convincing win and extends their unbeaten run in the Conference South to five games.
“I’m so pleased,” said the Magpies manager.
“People will talk about the 6-2 against Weston, which was a great performance, but as a team today, I thought that was excellent. I’ve said to them afterwards that it was a great team performance.
“We’ve had games this season when Adrian’s (Clifton) been outstanding, or Tarps (Dave Tarpey) has been outstanding, or whoever. But this was an outstanding team performance.”
Hippolyte said this week that the Magpies mustn't underestimate Staines and they produced a thoroughly professional performance at York Road.
“You’ve got to earn the right against the likes of Staines, or whoever’s at the bottom,” he said.
“You’ve got to work hard to get the right result and we’ve done that today. At half-time I told the players to believe in themselves. I talked about Basingstoke who every week seem to score in the 90th minute.
“That’s what good teams do. They keep going, they don’t concede and fingers crossed you’ll get that goal. When Harry Pritchard missed that chance from three-yards in the first half I thought it might be one of those days, but once we scored the first I thought we’d go on to win comfortably which in fairness is what we did.”
Staines had their chances in a more even first half, but Hippolyte felt they couldn't complain about the result.
“When you're down at the bottom you feel like the whole world is against you,” he said.
“I've been there myself when you have chances and don't take them and you feel sorry for yourself but I don't think they can have too many complaints today.”
