Burnham FC delight as Bird signs new contract
Burnham FC boss Martin Stone has expressed his delight at the news that Ryan Bird has signed a new contract to remain at The Gore.
Bird, who was the club’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, had been tipped to leave the Blues in search of pastures new.
Local rivals Slough Town were keen on the frontman as were several other clubs, but Stone has persuaded him to stay at Burnham for another year.
And in a further boost to the Blues boss, key defender Will Dunlop looks set to follow Bird’s lead and also put pen to paper.
Stone said: “Ryan has signed a new contract and Will has committed himself to the club as well.
“It’s great news for us, getting these two signed shows other players that we’re serious.”
He added: “For a lad who’s just 23, Ryan is a huge presence in the team, he’s a good footballer and is comfortable in any position.
“He’s committed himself because he believes in how we’re trying to move the club forward.
“And Will is probably one of the top three centre halves in the league. He’s a fantastic defender and we’re so happy to have him.”
Stone is adamant the signings of such highly rated players, show his side will be looking to challenge towards the top of the table next season.
“It shows what we’re trying to do,” he said. “It gives us a platform to get other players on board.
“I know my friend Steve Bateman wanted to take both of them down the road, Hendon were interested and so were Chesham and Wealdstone.
“But we got them to stay and we’re all delighted.”
* Midfielder Tom Collins, who ended last season at The Gore, has signed professional forms with Stevenage Borough FC.
The youngster, who was also at Windsor & Eton FC last season, has signed a three-month deal with the League 1 club, with the option of a further 12.
