A well-known figure in local cricketing circles recently returned from Australia having made his debut for his country in what he called a ‘historical and hysterical tour’.

Maidenhead’s Graham Roberts, who has been associated with Wargrave CC, Pinkneys Green CC, Slough CC and Henley CC in the past, took part in the first ever Over 70s test match in the world when England met Australia.

The match, which England lost by four wickets, was played at the famous Rupertswood ground in Sunbury, Victoria - the venue where the Ashes were created from a burned bail.

The second test in Dromana, Victoria saw England get their revenge, winning by 80 runs thanks largely to Roger Maynard scoring 101 not out.

The two tests were part of an Over 70s tour which saw the team also play matches against Australian state teams Victoria, New South Wales, Adelaide and Queensland and, on the way home, a Malaysia XI in Johor Bahru - all of which the tourists won.

Roberts was proud to be part of such a memorable occasion. He said: “I am proud to be the first Berkshire player to play for England Over 70s and having taken part in the first Over 70s test match. Having played for Berkshire Gentleman and Berkshire Over 50s and 60s this was a great way to conclude representative cricket.”

He added: “It was a historical and hysterical tour. A great trip and a privilege to be part of it. It also shows that life doesn’t end at 40 or 50 or 60.”

W An Over 60s tour at the same time saw England win five and draw one of their six tests. Steve Lynch from Beac-onsfield CC and Royal Ascot CC’s Nino Trapani were part of the squad.
