Eton illuminated with Christmas cheer

Crowds cheered as Eton ’s Christmas lights were switched on this evening.

Jim Dooley from the 1970s pop group the Dooleys joined mayor councillor Dorothy Kemp (pictured) to flick the switch.

He joked about the days when he, his brothers and sisters clocked up 30 chart hits and were always on Top of the Pops, saying: “This is what a pop star looks like when he gets old.”
Santa Claus arrived complete with husky dog that took children on sleigh rides through Eton during the evening.

But there was a serious purpose to it all. The switch-on was part of an evening of events to raise money for Eton Art Gallery’s Bomber Command Appeal, designed to raise money for a monument to the 55,000 courageous pilots who did not return from missions during World War 2.
Jim, now a photographer, has provided the images on the fundraising postcards being sold by gallery owner Sammy Morgan’s publishing company to raise money for the fund.
Tomorrow, a fundraising dance is due to be held at the Castle Hotel in High Street, Windsor.

Bee Gee Robin Gibb, a leading support of the fund was due to turn on the lights but had to return to America because of a family bereavement.
