Train struck with ice thrown from bridge
A passenger train was struck by ice thrown from Milley Bridge in Waltham St Lawrence on Sunday.
The service from London to Reading was hit by a lump of ice, or snow covered stone, thrown from the bridge at about 11.15am.
The object shattered the driver’s window.
He was treated at the scene for minor cuts but considered fit enough to continue driving the service.
The service was delayed for 20 minutes and caused knock on delays to services following on from London.
A group of youths were seen in the area around the time of the incident and officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that officers attended the line near to Milley Bridge, in Ruscombe following reports of a train window being shattered.
“Police believe that the window was shattered by ice that was thrown from a nearby bridge.
“The incident was reported at 11.19am and was also attended by paramedics from the South Central Ambulance Service who treated the train driver for cuts he received as the window shattered.”
The BTP spokesman continued: “We urge anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward and assist us with our enquiries.”
Anyone with any information should contact BTP on 0800 405040 quoting incident number 147 of 5/2/2012.
