Plans for 12 acre woodland approved

Plans to plant a 12-acre woodland in Shurlock Row to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee have been approved.

But worried villagers claim the Royal Borough has failed to address the root of their concern in giving the go-ahead for the Jubilee Woodland.

Plans to plant 6,400 saplings on land in Shurlock Row to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee were approved on Thursday.

The 13-acre plot is adjacent to the Pool Lane travellers site and near an illegal travellers camp which is due to be cleared by February 2013.

The land, used for grazing horses, was bought by the Royal Borough for £170,000 in 2009 as a precaution after the illegal travellers rolled into the road.

Only 12-acres of it is to be used for the woodland, which will be planted in the autumn.

The remaining acre has been earmarked as a possible extension to the Pool Lane site as part of the borough's requirement to create six new pitches for families on a waiting list.

Villagers said the cabinet was 'leaving the door open' for illegal travellers to set up home on the land.

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: "There is absolutely no plan for travellers to go on this land, although clearly because of its proximity to Pool Lane it could be considered, together with consideration of all sites across the borough."
