Tributes paid to Marie after husband jailed for her murder

Family and friends have paid tribute to Marie McGrory after her husband was sentenced to life in prison for her murder today.

John McGrory, 46, was found guilty of her murder by a jury at Reading Crown Court, who took just over an hour to come to their unanimous verdict.

McGrory, fatally attacked wife Marie, known as Milly, at their home in Holtspur Avenue, Wooburn Green, after she returned home from visiting her boyfriend in Scotland.

He pleaded guilty to her manslaughter, but claimed not to have murdered the 39-year-old on January 3. Today he was sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum of 14 years.

A statement from her family and friends, released after today’s verdict, said:  “Words will never be enough to describe the pain all of us feel.

“Milly was a special, loving person and whoever came into contact with her could feel her warmth and love. Our lives will never be the same again knowing the way she was taken.

"Milly was and is loved, her whole life and demeanour was all about love and peaceful spiritual understanding. Watching the changing moon, the changing seasons and mother earth without you will always hurt. Will we ever hit the floor giggling until we cry again? We will always think and dream of you with tears behind our smiles? Although your light is now behind the veil it can never be diminished, shine on sweetly star.”

JohnDetective Chief Inspector Vince Grey, who led the murder investigation, said: “This case involves the tragic death of a woman who had a life still ahead of her with her family.

“McGrory has robbed the family of this time that they would have spent with Milly due to a cowardly and malicious act.

“I am pleased with the verdict and hopefully, although Milly will never be forgotten, her family can start to move forward and use the obvious love they held for Milly to re-build their lives.”
