Fire at squash courts in Cookham
Firefighters are warning people to be extra careful when using electrical heaters during the cold spell.
The advice comes after a fire at the Odney Club in Odney Lane, Cookham, today.
Two crews from Maidenhead and one from Slough were called out to the John Lewis Partnership-owned club at 7.36am after fire broke out in the squash courts after a heater was put on in the morning.
The extension lead was coiled up and it heated up setting fire to the wooden floor.
Firefighters from white watch in Maidenhead and Slough, and the Maidenhead retained crew, quickly put out the blaze but were at the scene until about 9.30am cutting away the floor, which had been burned through, and carrying out investigations.
Chris Havers, green watch manager at Maidenhead, said: "I would like to warn residents of Windsor and Maidenhead to be very thoughtful in this cold weather of how they use electrical heaters and particularly make sure they are not near flammable material."
Watch manager Havers' advice included not letting towels or curtains fall on the heater or let sofas push up against it to avoid the airflow around it getting obstructed.
He also advised making sure extension leads are fully unravelled and capable of taking the load that electrical heaters demand.
