Bemused farm workers looking forward to a quiet pint have been turned away from a village pub for wearing 'working clothes'. Gary Clark and David Dickens called into The Crown on Cookham Moor on Friday night but were refused a drink because they were dressed in Copas Farms polo shirts and casual trousers. The pub says it won't serve people in builders or workmen's clothes - but will accept dog walkers with muddy boots.
A landscape painting by Sir Stanley Spencer could reach about half a million pounds at auction on Wednesday. The Bridle Path, which was painted in Cookham in 1938, is due to be sold at Christie's in London and has a guide price of £400,000-£600,000. The oil painting has been displayed in galleries including the village's own Stanley Spencer Gallery in the High Street, and the National Gallery in the capital. It depicts the view from the path off Long Lane in Cookham Dean towards Maidenhead and Windsor Castle is visible towards the left.
A heartfelt appeal has been made for the return of a painting stolen from the Stanley Spencer Gallery on Sunday. It was snatched from the building in Cookham High Street through a window which was smashed shortly before 1am.
