So the latest in Tesco's quest for worldwide domination is to open a store in Twyford - a beautiful place which has managed to retain its village feel by keeping things local.
True, it has a Waitrose, but even that is well tucked away and while it caters beautifully for the local residents, it doesn't get in the way or spoil the face of the village.
But not Tesco. This store will be right in the front of the High Street.
Delivery lorries, chugging out fumes, will surely have to stop on the main road, clogging up an already slow system.
The car park, heftily used even now, will overflow. Either that or people will pull up on the side of the road to nip in, again adding to congestion and pollution.
And what about the local traders? The newsagent, the gift shop, the cafe, the off licence?
Their business will be threatened and there is a real fear that our delightful shops and the people who work in them, who make our village what it is, will have to close and Tesco will take over completely.
Of course Tesco proudly hails us with promises of more jobs, charity donations and a desperate desire to work with the community.
But I would love someone to point out a village where, overall, that has happened.
Tesco is so relentless, that I am told by my step-father, with a 'don't you dare' look in his eye, it even sells funeral packages these days.
So even our local undertaker is not safe!
